Alternative Family Education (AFE) is an independent home study school provided for K-12th grade students and families who prefer an individualized approach to education, combined with the support of school district resources. The program gives parents the opportunity to directly supervise instruction, with professional guidance from a credentialed teacher consultant. The program is designed by and for homeschool families, with teacher consultants who are knowledgeable and supportive of home-based learning, state frameworks, and school district curriculum guidelines.

AFE is a good option for families who want to develop and/or resource curriculum, ensure student learning, and assess student progress towards meeting learning standards.

Each family, with the credentialed consultant teacher, determines the pace, methods, and the materials used for their child's educational program derived from the District's curriculum guidelines and state frameworks. Each student's learning goals are outlined in a contract signed by all parties involved. Student, family, and consulting teacher meet at least monthly to evaluate progress, set learning goals, plan activities, and to discuss resources and special interest courses offered by AFE. AFE provides students the opportunity to pursue an education of their own design, at their own pace. AFE also challenges each student to excel in areas of special interest, provides alternatives for students to achieve competency in basic skills, and creates a bridge between the traditional school and the community. AFE families see the world, their community, and the people in it as their classroom.

AFE provides opportunities for networking, community service, and establishing relationships with other students and families. In addition to regularly meeting with families, AFE teachers also offer ongoing classes, field trips, and workshops. Parents and students offer a wide variety of enrichment classes, groups, and workshops. The AFE Resource Center houses over 8,300 library materials that include curriculum materials, instructional materials, state frameworks, games, manipulatives, and parenting resources.

How AFE is different than distance learning during Shelter in Place: Distance learning varied at each school and grade level, but for most students it included Zoom meetings with their class and teacher as well as videos and assignments through Google Classroom. Students had the support of their teachers every week and could ask questions and get additional resources. Teachers guided the curriculum, assignments and grading. Parents provided support at home to help their students attend class meetings and complete assignments in Google Classroom. Homeschooling differs in that students and parents meet with the consultant teacher monthly. The family, guided by their consultant teacher, determines the curriculum and pace of the student’s education. Parents have the responsibility to teach their students at home or with the help of tutors and outside classes when needed.

Low Restrictions:

  • Students and families would continue to meet in person or via teleconference with consultant teachers to discuss learning progression, share resources, and ensure students are on track to graduate at the high school level, per the semester plan they create together.

  • Consultant teachers and parents would carry out enrichment activities and classes in grade spans.

  • Opportunities for networking would be available within the guidelines for group meetings from the County Public Health Officer.

Medium and High Restrictions:

AFE would carry out ‘business as usual’ with the exception that AFE teachers will need to adjust to offering their weekly enrichment classes twice per week, or offer synchronous televising or asynchronous recordings of the ‘live’ class for students opting to school from home only. Classes led by parents and students will not occur.
